I had the same question & from what I've looked up the slots you're referring too are called B&M keys , the computer comes with a Western Digital M.2 NVMe with the B&M keys on it but you can use a SSD with just an M key, this motherboard supports both. I ended up getting a 1TB Samsung evo 970 NVMe and it works perfectly & writes/reads faster than the WD.
