For wired, just plug it in and Windows should automatically recognize it. For wireless, you may need to go through the Bluetooth applet for the controller to sync. If you have a Wireless Adapter, that will allow you to use headphones with the controller wirelessly. If you connect wirelessly without using one, I believe you lose the headphone functionality. If you connect wired, the headphone jack should work once you plug a headphone/headset in.
