“Is it common for laptop to noticeably heat-up when charging the battery? We've had the laptop for about 6-weeks and one-time it got very hot, even though we were not running any applications other than web browsing, with no downloads etc.”

are you using an aftermarket charging cord or the one that comes with the computer ! Mine has experienced this happening!
