“If I'm not mistaken, the 2.5" SSD slot is unoccupied and the M.2 slot is used for SSD memory. So why do the specs on the HP website say that the only expansion slot is the SD slot? Can I not add a second drive to the unoccupied slot?”

Thanks for your interest in HP Pavilion Gaming Laptops! Yes, the 2.5" space for a hard drive is available. The term expansion slots usually refers to "plug-in" slots such as M.2 etc.
