I find the 256GB 'C' drive is adequate for the installed programs. I've added a 500GB SSD permanently connected to one of the USB-C ports to hold my documents. I doubt you can remove the existing 256GB SSD and replace it with a larger one. That would be a challenge. I find the external drive works very well. The external SanDisk 500GB SSD was very reasonable in cost.

Also, consider other options like an external hard or solid-state drive or even a cloud service like OneDrive or Google Drive. OneDrive comes with Office 365.
