Yes - you have the option of turning the screen off, but by default it stays on ambient mode at all times, and is lit up.

But its a bit brighter than I want on my side table so I end up putting the watch face down on the table. So when I grab it in the morning the screen is off, but that might be a result of it knowing its face down.
