The screen is quite small to answer texts, but you can easily reply with some emojis. Taking calls on the watch works very well.

Yes, it can be used to answer calls and reply to texts. It has a small mic and speaker so you can make calls. To reply to texts, you have the option of Quick Reply messages, a mic for speech-to-text, or you can type on the onscreen keypad. I prefer the keypad. Even though it's fairly small, Swype works on it and it's pretty accurate.
