It's a USB-C device, and will work just fine with either type of port. Thunderbolt devices can and usually do use more power & they're about 4 times faster than USB-C, so if you're copying data they can get hot. Now this hub will support USB-C charging up to 100 watts - If you do that, it'll probably get hot. But you've got an iMac, so just using it for USB, video out, and sd card access, you should be perfectly fine.
