Mac's are precisely engineered and adding a case can possible warp or bend the body and screen. If you know you are going to be traveling or visiting and area that is not friendly to computers in general you could consider leaving the case on for travel or light work but for any other reasons unfortunately it's best left to leave the case off. I still have my case and plan to use it if and when I travel and am uncertain how the computer will fair in transit but otherwise the case stays stored until that day.

I use this case on my M1 Pro 14 inch and love it. I currently have it docked and can say for sure it stays cool to the touch. Hope this helps!
