The timer is for a kitchen timer, not for microwaving food. To microwave food, hit the button with the wavy lines and then press start once you've selected your power level with the knob. Then, use the knob to select your cooktime. Then, press start again. Alternatively, you can repeatedly press the start button by itself to add 30 seconds of cook time.
