Hi There,

The cardboard cover on the right top or side wall of the microwave interior is there by design. The cardboard (mica) covers the waveguide system that feeds microwave energy into the cavity and should not be removed. The Insignia™ - 0.9 Cu. Ft. Compact Microwave - Stainless steel should not be used for any function if this cardboard cover is not in place. If removed, it would require service to replace.

I was wondering the same about the Insignia mic I purchased. It came with cardboard on the vents. However, the cardboard was put there for shipping purposes.

There should never ever be cardboard staying on a microwave. That would be a fire hazard.
