Bi-directional communication, YES.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. While the USB to RS-232 provides a small amount of power to the RS-232 side, it does support bi-directional data transfer- or it would not be RS-232 compliant. Thus if you are looking to power-up an older modem through the USB power, you might be in for sad reality. But if that old modem has it's own power adaptor, there should be no issue. The same applies to that old pocket sized Ethernet adaptor. As to mice, very few older mice and trackballs provide power to the RS-232 interface- so you may need to find help at the 'Geek Squad' or beyond ( if connecting a mouse, etc. is your intention ). Almost anything can be accomplished, but some situations are easier than others. Connection from a newer USB-only equipped PC to another PC would *also* involve a cable or part commonly referred to as a 'null modem'.
