“The manual says to have nearly 8 inches of clearance on all sides. I can only accommodate 3 on the sides and maybe 5 on the back. There is a cabinet maybe a foot over it and cabinets on each side. Will the fridge be alright or should I return it?”

I have hardly any on the right (door hinge side) and have had no problems. Be sure to leave some room behind for air circulation and clean behind regularly.
