• Tried using the cable that came with insignia computer speakers with ipod. It did NOT work: one speaker with greatly reduced volume and the other no output at all

• Yes, if the receiver has a 3.5mm output jack and the speaker set has a 3.5 input jack that hooks to both speakers in a stereo set. Normally this type of cable is used to connect stereo preamplifier-level signals to the final stage of amplification, but if the plugs and jacks physically match up I don't see why it wouldn't work.
