• As long as the battery is fully charged, you don't need it hooked up to anything. It seems a full battery charge will last about 3 hours, then my kids need to use the car charger if they want to keep using them.

• If you charged up the dvd portable player then you have less than 2 hours play time according to the manual information. I haven’t tried it .
