“Can I leave this plugged into the cigarette lighter at all times (even when not charging) or will that drain my car's battery or overheat the adapter?”

Leaving it plugged in does not drain battery. It doesn’t appear to draw power until a phone is plugged into it.

you can leave it in the car plugged up, your battery weill be fine, I keep mines in the car i have a cadillac

I've always unplugged the unit when not in use.

Unplug when not charging. Just like tv when turn off but current still drawing electricity to the cable

That’s a great question I never thought about that and I will definitely take out of my cigarette lighter when I get home from work daily just in case .

I keep mine plugged in and I haven’t had any issues. I think it depends on the vehicle
