Why would you ever need to cover this? I can't imagine a scenario where this would be visible once the fridge is in its final position. I personally would prefer that it is exposed so that it can get great air flow (good for the motor longevity) and is easily replaceable if you ever needed to replace it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Since this doesn't have a fan in the back, there's no need for a cover to protect fingers and to keep things like paper from getting sucked in. I imagine it's to cut costs as well as allow the water in the defrost drop pan to evaporate more quickly. Once you have it in place, you won't notice it. The only issue would be if you pushed it so far back the compressor touched your wall, but that shouldn't be an issue since you should always have at least an inch behind any refrigerator to allow for proper airflow.

Please try again later.Since there is no fan by the compressor, there is no reason to have a cover to prevent fingers from getting cut or paper getting sucked into the fan. The lack of a cover lowers the cost and also lets heat dissipate more efficiently from the back. As long as it's not touching the wall, which you shouldn't do anyway, there should be no problem without the cover.
