I had bought 2 of the Insignia sound bars and I have one connected with an optional cable and the other one to RCA cables. I think the Bass depth is a little better with the optical cable to be truthful.

You don't need the optical cable. You'll get a good sound experience without it. To be 100% honest this little speaker isn't going to blow your mind with or without the optical cable. it's just meant to give you a bigger sound than your regular TV speakers. If you're really looking for a rich sound experience. You should really be getting the bigger multi speaker surround sound. If you just want louder than your regular TV for a good price. This is a great pick.
