“I'm running this unit from a Samsung TV via the optical cord. I have the TV set on external speaker and am running a Roku Steaming stick. I can't seem to get the Roku remote to register the Insignia device. Volume doesn't work. Any suggestions?”

Also change tv Audio to PCM Usually found in advanced settings Will not work unless TV is External and PCM
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Have you changed the Optical/Digital options? Sometimes (depending on the TV or set of speakers) they need to be on PCM in order to work. Also, be sure the speaker is connected, turned on and the optical input has been selected. Be sure the optical connectors are well set both at the TV and at the speaker (you'll hear a low click when they are truly connected). If none of this works, do troubleshooting: connect the speaker to another device with an optical output, and the same with the TV (another speaker), that way you can isolate which of the 2 is not working as it should.
