“I'm having trouble getting my headphones to work with the 3.5mm plug-in. Nothing I'm doing seems to help, and I know the soundbar is working. If I can't get it to work, I'll be bringing the soundbar back for a refund.”

That won't work because the 3.5 mm jack on the soundbar is an INPUT, not an output. It's another option for connecting to devices that put sound out. There is no headphone jack for listening.
