Hi Mick, Absolutely needs to be plugged into a wall outlet, it's not a power storage device, this is just a pass through to give you a couple more outlets.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You only have to plug it into the wall if you want power to go to the plug. Yes you can plug 2 cords into it, but whatever is on the other end of the cord will not work unless the cord is plugged into the wall.

Please try again later.If you wanted to take two extension cords and connect them so that the plug was in the middle, to essentially have a long extension cord with an available outlet at the join-point, yes, that works. It doesn't have to be DIRECTLY plugged into the wall, just... you know... eventually.
