That depends if your old desktop has USB 3 inputs or not. USB 3 inputs are simply labeled by the blue colored USB input on the desktop. If you do not have any blue colored inputs on your desktop than this will not work for you. If you do however this will transfer documents to pictures to music files to videos over the USB 3 to USB C interface of this cable.

This unit let you charges and transfers files with this USB-C to standard USB connectors. It would not work if your device no longer operating.
