The cord is (5.9) five feet nine inches. A extension card CAN be use as long as its rated for the item it is providing power for. You need a UL listed 3 prong grounded APPLIANCE cord. Like one you might use for a window air conditioner. Must be an appliance cord. In this case the heavier the better. You don't want an extension cord to over heat or provide to low voltage. So you can not go wrong with an over kill. Also, shorter is better. A short cord will draw less amps on your breaker especially during compressor start up. That's where it pulls the most, an less after it running. So SHORT and HEAVY.
