“I will have to set it on its back to drive it home. The bestbuy guy says it does not have to sit upright for a few hours (like a refrig) for oil to settle before turning on. I see no mention of this in the manual. Any thoughts?”

I have another portable ac unit from another brand and it clearly stated to keep it upright for 24 hours before first operation due to shipping.

If you cannot transport it standing up, it will need to sit upright for a few hours to let the oil settle. All portable A/C units require this, otherwise you could damage the unit.

The Best Buy person is not an HVAC technician. I would let it sit uprite for 24 hours or it could void the warranty. Best Wishes!!
