“I just got this dehumidifier and its does its job for awhile then turns off for 1 or 2 minutes max then turns on for a really long time again. I can't imagine the humidity is changing that much in that 2 minute time span... I this normal or a defect?”

• My unit will run on manual until water tray is full and then shuts off. sounds like you have a issue with yours.

• I have had one for a month and have not noticed that behavior. I suggest calling the manufacturer and asking them or taking it back.
