YES: You can wait while it distributes the dry dirty clothes to balance the load and than starts filling the wash with water. There is a pause button and simply press that and your lid dis-engages or "unlocks" the child lock for you to add more clothes or add detergent. The manual shows you another way to lock or unlock the child lock and its simple. Good luck!

No, you have to have laundry in the washer in order for the machine to sense the load size. This washing machine has auto dispensing feature which allows detergents, bleach, and fabric softener to be dispensed at the correct time with the correct about of water .
