It is for liquid to drain into a tiny screw mounted drip pan in the back.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I originally put it in a carpeted room where it stayed for about 2 years. Initially, I was concerned about drippage but I didn't want to delay starting to use it, so I worked with what I had and took to the top off of one of those wide Sterlite three drawer storage containers, and it didn't fit back-to-front, but it was wide enough and it covered the portion in the back that was open. However, when I decided to move it downstairs in my home, not only was there not a drop of water leaked out, but it's been on a tile floor with nothing underneath for over a month now and still, nothing is dripping. Maybe this is a concern for people that run it with the dial turned all the way up, but I did that for nearly the first year I owned it, and like I mentioned, my makeshift drip tray was dry when I moved the mini-fridge over a year after having turned the dial down to halfway between 5 and 6. Maybe in that time anything that dripped out dried -- I couldn't say for sure. But I know for a fact that if it ever did, it isn't still doing it now. Hope this helps you!
