When your toaster oven is in use or cooling down, make sure that there is at least 6 inches (15 cm) between the toaster oven and any other surface.

The instructions that came with the toaster oven stated that I shouldn't even have anything behind it closer than 4-5 inches, as the exterior does heat up to some degree. I am reading this inquiry at work, so can't pull out the instruction manual to be more specific. I do not have anything on either side of the unit, nor on top and I have it sitting on a granite counter.
