“my insignia tv seems to buffer for an insanely long time before connecting. Is there anything to shorten that time. None of my other tv's (6) do this, only the fire tv.”

Perhaps it is not the tv, but your internet connection. I had Verizon hardwire signal boosters on my second floor and in my attic recently to improve signal strength in the bedrooms and attic game room. no buffering at all.
