You can connect a cable box via HDMI and watch live TV without ever connecting the TV to the internet. However, if you want to use smart features like streaming apps (Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, etc.), Alexa voice control, or software updates, then a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection is required.
