“Just bought a 55" 4k UHD TV. Upon hooking up it became apparent that viewing at about 45 degrees the picture is fading out when compared to viewing straight on at approximately 90 degrees. It this correctable? If not I guess it goes back to the store.”

Short answer, No. It's the nature of the beast. Effective viewing angle varies a little between LCD's but 45 degrees is pushing it for most. 30 degrees give or take, is about the limit before the screen seems to start washing out.
