“I can't seem to open the lid without having to manually push down the small black pin on the back? Any ideas why”

The lock pin should automatically retract once the pot depressurizes. Per instructions you need to wait about 10 mins after cooking stops before attempting to open the lid. If you touch the pressure release and lots of steam vents, then you need to wait. Alternatively you could hold the vent to release the pressure. Be sure to take precautions to protect yourself from the hot steam exhaust. Hope this helps.
