“What is the metal lining inside the freezer made of? Is it food safe? I wiped the inside down with wet paper towels before using and the paper towel was turning black/grayish while wiping. Is this typical or something to be concerned about?”

I believe it is a very thin aluminum lining which commonly stains towel when wiped!

We highly advise you to wash the inside with a damp, warm cloth and a baking soda solution (two tablespoons in a quart of water), then wipe dry with a dry cloth.
