Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You can use it without the power supply so long as you connect it to a USB port on a computer. That is how I use mine and I can not only connect portable hard drives but also charge devices like the iPhone 6. NOTE: Some portable hard drives have a higher power consumption so you may find that they won't work with this hub without the addition of the power supply for the hub. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell which portable drives will need the extra power until you plug them in. If there is not enough power the drive light may come on but you may or may not hear the drive spin up. I have even experienced drives that try to spin up but then fail and spin again repeatedly. This is usually the case for older portable drives. I hope that this helps and is not information overload.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No power adapter required. It recharges using USB voltage. When you plug it in, you will see a yellow light meaning charging on the adapter. When the light turns green, it's fully charged.
