You should be able to use it to charge your cell phone, however you might want to get a USB to C charge cable in order to leave the plug free.

I used the converter in Croatia last week. The USB plugs worked fine in the converter mode. I plugged my phone and Apple Watch each night when I went to bed. It never damaged them. Just don't plug any two prong plugs into the three prong outlet on the front. It will overheat and burn up the charger (Canon Battery Charger) that you are using.
