The system apparently detects the speed of the disc and tries to compensate to keep an accurate speed. If you hold the platter in place when it wants to spin, you'll hear the record spin faster when you let it go. Switch speeds to 45 and then back to 33 1/3. It should start over with the proper speed. (or return the needle back off the record and let it lock down... then start playback again. I've only had this happen once and that was the reason.
