“Aside from getting a few cases, if I still have the box the external hard drive came in, (because I never throw anything out), would that be a way to make sure they don't get shaken or ruined also? I'm driving an hour with them. Thank you!”

make sure there is no magnetic interfrence near to External HDD. also make sure you are not putting alot of load on hard disk. hard disk should me up and save place like laptop. but if you put harddisk into box does not any effect or lost of data. its save.hope this snswer your question.
