There are no buttons on the side, only a dial adjustment for volume, it has an AM/FM radio, antenna is small metal that can be stored on top of unit; power button is on the bottom row on the right end if facing the unit.

Hi Pepper, the buttons of the boombox is on the top. Yes this CD get AM channels. To turn on the unit there is a power button among the buttons. It is local antenna.
