This happens when the controller battery pack has an issue but let it charge for a while it'll be fine

Take it back and get a replacement.

The light did not come on the first time I connected the cable. Turned out the battery was fully charged right out of the box. When I used the controller with the new battery for a few hours and then re-connected the cable, the red light came on. It went off again when the battery was fully charged.

Can you explain your question with a little bit more detail? Thanks, because this is for the wireless controller and not the wired controller.
