I just bought the desk recently. The surface has grooves in the design making it appear like wood. At first, i thought the same when I set .ine up but then realized it was just the design. Its barely noticeable honestly. I actually forgot about it till I saw your question and I see the desk every day. Its a beautiful desk and worth the price. Very sturdy.
