• The "not included" is referring to the phone itself. Even though you see one in the picture on the box, it is not included in the packaging. All you're receiving is the clock/radio. As far as whether it's compatible with an iPhone 5, it said that it was in your question.

• It works just fine with my iPhone 6. It charges and will play music through the speakers.

• The iPhone is not included. Everything else is included. If you have a phone you can plug it in and it will work.
