“I have a flat screen smart tv with roof antenna. Tall trees mess up local station reception. Would converter solve the problem so I can get better reception. This is not an analog tv. Right now I use HULU for local stations.”

No... This is a digital receiver that is basically the same as your buit-in TV reciever but meant to connect to devices like projectors that do not have built-in digital receivers. With digital, you either have a usable signal or you have no reception.
