Tough question to answer without knowing which camcorder model from Sony you're working with. Some have built in mics that you should be able to mute while recording-usually a feature of the camcorder. If your camcorder has an external mic port, you can plug anything into it, and the camcorder will assume the audio is coming from the port, but if you don't have anything connected to the plug, the film will have no sound. You don't need this dongle if that's all you want to do. They even sell the audio/mic plugs with no wires attached you could use. All you're doing is defeating the camcorders ability to record sound or play it back if it has plugs in the port(s) on the camera not connected to anything. The picture will be fine...although you may want to either narrate or use subtitles:-)
