“We have a KOSS audio splitter and when my wife and I plug in our respective Bose headphones and ear buds, my head phones work great but she can barely hear through her ear buds.”

Your reply was insufficient re the Koss splitter. We have since purchased a Belkin 5-way splitter and both Bose headphones and ear buds work great and require no adjustment. Suggest you discard the Koss product and focus on Belkin. Thanks.
