• Yes it is battery powered. The supplied AC adaptor allows for plugging it in.

• According to the manual, the HD Raido can be powered by either the included AC adaptor or using AA sized alkaline batteries. It only operates on batteries if the AC adapter is unplugged. I am currently using the radio without any batteries in it by plan to install batteries for blackout or backyard situations.

• Yes you can put in double A s. Not sure what the reception would be, have not tried it.
