If you need to attach your new TV's HDMI audio output to an older RCA system (the red, white & yellow cord one) you need a powered converter or extractor. With a converter the yellow connector is for the video signal, so you won't use that one if you're just trying to get stereo sound. Best Buy has an excellent one from Insignia. An audio extractor is cheaper if you don't need the video output and it will convert an HDMI audio to red/white stereo cable connectors, good for going into a stereo audio amplifier/receiver setup. In any case, be sure to get a device that coverts HDMI to RCA, not the other way around- there's actually different ones made to convert the signal going each way (HDMI to RCA or RCA to HDMI). If however you'd like your TV to have a surround sound system (you're almost there already!) you need to get an AV receiver. You would connect an HDMI cable from the TV output to the receiver and hook up your current speakers to the receiver's subwoofer and L/R Front and Rear. Simply add a center channel speaker to the array and you would have 5.1 surround sound.
