• Yup, that is exactly what I needed it for and it works great. Got a new computer with only HDMI video output and my old monitor is vga.

• Yes it works. Just keep in mind that your older monitor will not display as beautifully as your laptop. Just plug in each end and adjust your display locations, as with any 2nd screen set up, and it works well. I had no problems.
