If your TV has an optical port then connect an optical cable from the TV to the Converter. then from the "Audio - Out" side of the converter connect Audio RCA stereo cable from converter to Audio "in" or "Aux In" RCA connectors on the receiver if it has them.

You run HDMI from your box (Sat. Cable, Tivo) into your HDMI input likely marked sat/cable on the receiver and if you have a DVD/Blu Ray player run an HDMI cable from the player into the DVD/Blu input on the receiver. You run an HDMI from the output of your receiver into an HDMI input (usually use HDMI 1) of your new Sony and you are good to go. Be sure to have the newer HDMI cables, any marked for 4k/ ethernet use will work. You do not need to buy the most expensive HDMI cables, just the newer ones for 4k use. Even if you are streaming directly into a new Smart TV, if there is no optical out on the TV it means you do not need it, that the sound is going through the HDMI cable as all but the early versions are two way.
