• This is exactly what I'm using mine for...optical out from my TV to RCA inputs on my receiver.

• TV “optical out” would sending audio. DVD player “inputs” would be receiving audio. It depends on what you are trying to do here. If the audio is coming from a source to your tv, and then “outputted” through the Optical cable to your surround system, then you are good to go. Aux port I’m assuming is 3.5mm (headphone jack).
