“The sound adjustment "wheel" on my player is not providing any change in volume when turned. It plays at a very low volume and cannot be increased. Is there any way to correct this? (It has played well previously)”

Make sure you are using the headphone jack (green)and not the line out (black). They are right next to each other and the line out is not adjustable.
